Dean Rogers, CFA

Portfolio Manager | Associate Advisor

What is your background?

Originally from a rural town in southwest Missouri, I graduated from Baylor in 2016 with dual-majors in accounting and finance. While at Baylor, I was fortunate enough to work as an investment analyst for one of the university’s endowment funds – where I quickly developed a passion for public markets and alternative investment strategies. I then relocated to San Antonio to begin my post-graduate career at USAA, rotating between a number of corporate roles before ultimately moving to Austin and joining Silicon Hills in September 2020.

As Portfolio Management Analyst, I am responsible for execution of the firm’s investment program – including securities trading, portfolio design and construction, and subsequent oversight of portfolio performance. Additionally, I am responsible for research and due diligence of public and private investment strategies, as well as ongoing analysis of economic trends for presentation to the firm’s investment committee.

Additionally, I was a Founding Partner of Silicon Hills Technologies and hold the following certifications: Series 65 designation, Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), and Certified Enterprise Analytics Professional (CEAP)

Why did you become a financial advisor?

I’ve always been deeply fascinated with financial markets, particularly the opportunity that lies in uncertainty. Balancing risk and return is just as much art as it is science, and crafting that unique solution for each client is one of the most rewarding aspects of sound wealth management.

What challenges do you enjoy?

Whether it be constructing portfolios or building financial models, I’m intrigued by challenges that can be solved with math or data science. Confronting subjectivity with objectivity is never an easy task, but doing so often lends itself to the best solutions – particularly since math is the only language spoken universally around the world.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

In my free time, I enjoy travelling and spending time with friends and family – but when in Austin, you can find me paddle boarding on Lady Bird Lake, hiking the Barton Creek Greenbelt, or catching a live show at one of Austin’s many authentic venues.

What are your areas of expertise?

Public and Private Alternative Investments, Financial Modeling, Process Automation, and Portfolio Design and Construction

What are a  few of your favorite things?

Aviation, National Parks, Water Sports, the St. Louis Cardinals, and of course Baylor Football

What is your favorite quote?

“The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.” ― William Arthur Ward

What inspires you?

Born into a family of small business owners, I’ve always been fascinated with entrepreneurship – particularly the success one can find when combining passion with tenacity and innovation. There are a number of unique challenges facing investors and entrepreneurs, but with personalized, well-crafted solutions – those challenges can quickly be translated into opportunity.

What is one thing about you that would surprise people who know you?

As a kid, I was always fascinated with weather and almost pursued meteorology in college. That was until I began working as a part-time assistant for Baylor’s finance department and became quickly fascinated by the subject matter – ultimately changing my major as a result.
